"Politically, Mr. Nichols is a Republican and has been more or less active in local affairs. He has been school director and is at present [abt 1912 /H/] secretary of the school township. He has served continuously as assessor of State Center township for the past twenty years, a longer period than anyone holding a like office in the county. He has been chosen director of the Marshall Couonty Fair Association at Marshalltown. He has always been greatly interested in the growth of this county, and he is known as a man of charitable imputles, giving of his time and money to help the needy. he and his two sons, Lloyd and Earl, are members of Terrestrial Lodge No. 276, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, at State Center, and he has occupied all the chairs in the same; the father is also a member of the council and commandery at Marshalltown, and both he and Mrs. Nichols belong to the Order of the Eastern Star at State Center. He and two sons, Ray and Earl, belong to Eagle Camp No. 2524, State Center, and Mr. Nichols belongs to Signet Chapter No. 38, Marshalltown. He and his family are members of the Presbyterian church at State Center." [Hist 004: 791]
