Notes from Irish-Catholic immigrants in Dorset, VT Notes for WILLIAM (WILLIE THE YORKER) MCDEVITT: Dorset Historical Society "Dorset & Manchester Quarries" contained in 3-ring binders There is a section on a "McDevitt" quarry "About 50 ft above the valley level, and 50 rods SE of the McDevitt Store" 1911 - Will McDevitt...called the firm the Dorset Valley Marble Company. Operations ended 1914.

His grandson remembers:

William owned the McDevitt quarry until he sold for $90,000. The subsequent owners have since taken a million dollars worth of marble out of that quarry. He was active in town meetings and voted Democrat.

    DORSET - William Francis McDevitt, 94, died Tuesday evening in a convalescent home in Rutland. He was born here Sept 30, 1864, the son of John and Jane (Hill) McDevitt.
    Mr. McDevitt was one of the former owners of the Green Mt. Marble Co. and a member of St. Jerome Church in East Dorset.
    He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Eva Burns of South Dorset, Mrs. Clara Nugent and Mrs. Paul Whalen, both of Rutland, and Mrs. Leland Schlieder of Manchester Center. Also surviving is a son, Edward McDevitt of South Dorset, 16 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services are pending. Friends may call at the Brewster Funeral Home, Wednesday 7 - 9 p.m., and Thursday 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m.
    Burial will be in the spring in St. Jerome Cemetery in East Dorset.

    Selectmen of Dorset to W. F. McDevitt

    Whereas, the Selectmen of the Town of Dorset, Bennington Co. and State of Vt., in the year 1907, granted to Wm. F. McDevitt of said Dorset, permission and authority to make necessary excavations or ditches within the limits of the highway in a certain portion of said town, to wit, in South Dorset, for the purpose of laying in such ditches or excavations piped for the purpose of conducting therein water for the domestic use of himself and others and whereas such permission and authority was verbal only, and no record of such permission and authority was ever made: and whereas the said Wm. F. McDevitt, relying upon such verbal permission and authority, has made such ditches and excavations and has laid therein pipes for the purposes aforesaid: Now therefore, we the undersigned, selectmen of said town of Dorset, Vt. Hereby notify and confirm the action of our predecessors in office, namely said selectmen of said Dorset for the year 1907, and we further grant permission and authority to the said Wm. F. McDevitt, his heirs and assigns, right and authority to continue the use of such ditches & excavations as he has heretofore made for the purposes aforesaid, and do hereby give and grant to him and them, permission and authority to open such ditches and excavations for the purpose of laying new pipes therein, or for repairing those already laid.
    Said Wm. F. McDevitt, his heirs or assigns, always and at all times hereafter shall bear the entire expense of such work, and shall perform it in such a manner as not to damage said highways, or to impede public travel therein, and shall save said Town of Dorset from any and all expense, cost or damage resulting from the exercise of the rights hereby granted.

    Quit Claim Deed
    Wm. F. McDevitt to Dorset Valley Marble Co

    Know all men by these Presents: That I William F. McDevitt of Dorset, in the County of Bennington and State of Vermont, in consideration of one (1) dollar and other valuable considerations received to my full satisfaction of the Dorset Valley Marble Company, a corporation duly organized under the laws of the State of Vermont, and having its principal place of business in South Dorset, in said County of Bennington, have remised, released and quit-claimed, and by these presents do remise, release and forever quit-claim unto the said grantee, said Dorset Valley Marble Company, its successors and assigns all my right and title in and to a certain piece or parcel of land lying and being in the Town of Dorset, in the County of Bennington, and State of Vt and described as follows, namely: - Being the right to enter upon the lands below described and to quarry and remove marble or other stone from the same, together with the right to erect thereon derricks and all other machinery required for the developing of marble or other quarries and the convenient and economical prosecution of the work of quarrying and removing marble or other stone, together with the right to use the water, whether in springs or brooks, that is on said described lands to whatever extent the same may be required in the proper conduct of the work and business of quarrying and removing marble or other stone; said parcel of land being bounded as follows, viz:-
    On the south by lands of this grantor, said Wm. F. McDevitt, and by lands of Thomas McCormack, on the east by lands of David Wade's Estate and by lands formerly owned by S.H. West, on the north by lands of the Norcross-West Marble Company, and by lands of John McDevitt, as the fence now runs, and by the highway that leads in an easterly direction from the store of the said Wm. F. McDevitt to the dwelling-house on said described lands, commencing at a point in said highway where it is intersected by the brook flowing to the south, on the west by lands of Jas. F. Burns, lands of this grantor and lands of Edward Molloy. Also a right of way through and across the lands of this grantor, said lands being described as follows, namely:- Said land lies on the east side of the highway leading from said South Dorset to Manchester Center, Vermont, and is bounded on the north by the school-house lot and lands of this grantor, on the east by lands of this grantor, on the south by lands of Edward Molloy and on the west by said highway; containing one hundred acres of land be the same more or less.
    To have and to hold the above remised, released and quit-claimed premises with the appurtances thereof unto the said grantee, said Dorset Valley Marble Company, its successors and assigns, to them and their own proper use, benefit and behoof forever, so that neither I, Wm. F. McDevitt, said grantor, nor my heirs, nor any person or persons claiming under me or them, shall at any time hereafter, by any way or means, have claim or demand any right or title to the aforesaid premises or appurtances, or to any part or parcel thereof forever.
    In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12«sup»th«/sup» day of June, 1911.
