- Some internet genealogy sites have stated that William McCoy was a son of George McCoy and Margaret "Peggy" Edmiston, but this appears to be in error, as George McCoy and "Peggy" Edmiston were married on 18 November 1816 in Bath County, Virginia. [Bath County, Virginia marriages to 1850], some 13 years after the birth of this William McCoy. George McCoy appears to be a likely candidate as a sibling for William, but certainly not his father.
