Hi. I am looking for ancestors and any additional info on William, William Sr., and David McClanahan. I have lots of info in my files (not very organized right now) on SW Virginia McClanahans. WILLIAM MCCLANAHAN

Gregory Lindstrom -> Judith Peterson -> Sylvia Hypes -> Luther Hypes -> William Walker Hypes -> Sarah E. McClanahan -> William McClanahan -> William McClanahan -> David McClanahan

William McClanahan was born January 26, 1783 to William McClanahan and Margaret Snodgrass on Meadow Creek, Botetourt County, Virginia (Virginia Death Certificate).

William fought in the War of 1812 as a private under Captain Joseph Hannah's Company in the Virginia Militia. The Pension record is listed under WC-19367 (Margaret McClanahan). Another record is listed under WO-22.398

William served in Brigade 13, Division 3 under Col. James McDowell (McDowell's Flying Camp). William's Botetourt County regiment was the 121st regiment with the Regimental command staff of:

Lt.Col. Elisha McClenehan February 23, 1811 Maj. James McClenehan February 23, 1811 Maj. Barclay Kyle February 23, 1811

It is not known at the present time is these McClenehans were related to William. William enlisted in Amsterdam, Botetourt County, Virginia on July 11, 1813 and served until October 10, 1813 as a Private under Captain Joseph Hannah.

William McClanahan married Margaret Walker on May 12, 1818 in Botetourt County, Virginia. They were married by John Holms. Margaret Walker was born around 1800 to George Walker, Sr. and Margaret Heefner. Margaret's granddaughter stated that she was born in the town of New Castle, Virginia. William and Margaret had at least seven children:

George Walker was born on December 1, 1824 in Botetourt County, Virginia. He was educated at Emery and Henry College, at Emory, Virginia. He later became at Methodist Minister. His first wife was Ann Elizabeth. On October 17, 1858 george married May D. (Harris) Shive, a widow with a single child.

William S. Educated at Salem College and later became a Lutheran Minister.

Margaret Martha was born March 11, 1829. She married her first cousin, George Alexander Reynolds on August 6, 1846.

Lucy Ann was born July 20, 1832 in Botetourt County, Virginia. Lucy married Archibald Caldwell on May 11, 1848.

William A. Married Jennie D. Davison. William died in October, 1867.

William and Margaret are listed in the 1860 Census, Valley of Sinking Creek, Craig County as: William McClanahan 77 years old Margaret 60 years old James W. 24 years old Sarah E. 22 years old

William, according to family tradition, was extemely wealthy and belonged to the famous McClanahan family of the area. William was suppose to have owned 35 slaves and gave 4 slaves to his daughter, Sarah, when she married. William is also suppose to have been extremely cruel to his slaves, beating both men and women frequently. Another side of William is his devotion to both the Roanoke College and Lutheran Orphanage in Salem, Virginia. He is suppose to have heavily endowed both organizations. The Lutheran Church Orphanage is said to have been founded by member of his wife family. (Told to the author at the 1991 Hypes family reunion in Princeton, WV).

Further investigation has revealed at William McClanahan's son, William S. McClanahan, was a Lutheran Minister, educated at Salem College in Salem, Virginia. William S. was indeed involved with helping his Alma Mater and helped organize the Lutheran Orphan's home. It may be that the family stories about William McClanahan were actually based on facts by his son. ("Then Along Came Joe", by Wilma Dunlap).

William's real estate was valued at $6,000 and personal wealth at $3,600.

William died in March 26, 1866 on Sinking Creek, Craig County, Virginia (Death Certificate). His will was written on November 20, 1862. (Will Book A, Pg.438, Craig County Courthouse).
