William Larcombe was born on 6th June 1831 at Hewish in the parish of Crewkerne, Somerset, son of an agricultural labourer named James Larcombe and his wife Hannah. William appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings in the nearby hamlet of Roundham. By 1851 the family had returned to Hewish, and William was working as a farm labourer.

The following year, William joined the Metropolitan Police in London, serving as a constable. In 1856 he was married at St Pancras in the northern suburbs of London to Mary Hutchings. They presumably had known each other from childhood, as she was from the hamlet of Woolminstone in Crewkerne parish, which is very close to Hewish and Roundham.

William's pension records show that he served in the police until 1863, although curiously the 1861 census finds him not in London but back in Somerset, and described as a billiard maker. Also, throughout the 1860s William and Mary were having children born in Somerset. According to William's pension records however, he served in the police in London until September 1863, when he was injured in the left kidney in the course of his duty, leading to him being discharged and given a pension of £25 per year. His pension records also record that he was 5'10½" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

By 1871 William and Mary were living in Lambeth in London's southern suburbs, and William was working as a ticket collector. They were still in Lambeth in 1881, with William described as a railway policeman. William and Mary appear to have had at least six children together between 1860 and 1875.

By 1891 the family had moved slightly further out of London to Isleworth, then in Middlesex. Mary died in 1897, aged 64. William appears in the 1901 census living in Isleworth with his youngest son and daughter-in-law. William died in 1904, aged 72.
