    OCCUPATION: Weaver [ILR 1:36; ELR 14:53]. Yeoman [ILR 3:29, 31, 101, 142, 4:496]. Merchant (on 20 June 1673, "Deacon Goodhue" was one of three men of "Ipswich, all retailers of wine," who were ordered to "bring in their accounts of their several drafts of wine, beer and cider, according to law, also for the nonpayment of the rates and imposts" [EQC 5:223]; on 5 May 1674, "Deacon Goodhue was licensed to sell wine by the gallon and also to sell liquors, as other merchants," and on 21 April 1675, 26 September 1676 and 25 September 1677, this license was renewed [EQC 5:307, 6:27, 204, 337]; "Deacon William Goodhue Senior of Ipswich, merchant," frequently acted as a banker, taking mortgages on land held by other Ipswich residents [ILR 3:163, 4:27, 81, 139, 141, 147, 5:177, 422; ELR 9:154, 10:21]; he was occasionally in court as a plaintiff, usually suing over debt arising from his mercantile activities [EQC 5:12, 219, 6:50]).
    CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to Ipswich church prior to 7 December 1636 implied by freemanship. Deacon by 1668 [ILR 3:132, EQC 4:106].
    FREEMAN: 7 December 1636 (as Will[iam] Goodhewe") [MBCR 1:372].

    William Goodhue, the immigrant ancestor, was born in England about 1612, and came to America in 1635-36, settling in Ipswich, Massachusetts. … In his advanced age he gave up his Ipswich home, and went to live with his son William in Chebacco, now Essex, where he died in 1699. … He married (first) in England, Margery Watson, native of Kent. She died in Ipswich, August 28, 1668. He married (second) Mary Webb, widow, February 7, 1669-70, and she died at Ipswich, September 7, 1680. He married (third) July 26, 1682, Bethiah Grafton, who died December 6, 1688. He married (fourth) in 1689, Remember Fisk, of Wenham, Massachusetts, who survived him and died at Ipswich, February 16, 1701-02.
