Reply to Roberta Hirth's message titled: "John Allison and David McComb Lancaster Co PA connections to Fultons" dated 5/10/04.

Thank you, Roberta, for sharing the research notes from the Lancaster County Historical Society. I agree, the citation "HHL 2/19/48" is consistent with Fulton researcher, Herbert L. Leister of Minnesota.

Leister suggests that William Fulton of Fawn Township, York Co, PA, married Mary McComb, daughter of David McComb of Little Britain Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. I cannot prove, or disprove, Leister's theory.

Here's what I've found so far:

  • * * William Fulton of Fawn Twp, York Co, PA * * *

On 9 Feb 1766, William Fulton recorded a PA Warrant for 200 acres near Little Muddy Creek, Fawn Twp, York County. Fulton named the tract, "May Field."

In 1769, William Fulton recorded two separate Applications, #5362 and #5363.

William Fulton of Fawn served as "overseer of the poor" in 1774, 1778, and 1779.

In 1775, a William Fulton (same?) married "Mary Ker", Mt. Pleasant. [Ref: Records of Rock Creek Congregation, York Co, PA.]

On 26 May 1776, infant Mary Fulton, b 14 April 1776, was baptized by Rev. James Clarkson at "Guweenstown" [Guinston]. Parents identified as "William Fulton and Mary (of Fawn)." Sponsors: Thomas Currie and Alexander Muir, Elders. [Which William Fulton? Which mother? Mary McComb or Mary Ker?]

On 1 Nov 1781, William Fulton of Fawn Twp signed his Will and provided for:

Mary (-?-) Fulton, wife 1. John Fulton, "under 21" [b aft 1760] 2. Alexander Fulton 3. James Fulton 4. Elijah Fulton 5. Hugh Fulton 6. Mary Fulton 7. Nancy Fulton

[William Fulton named 3 executors: wife, Mary (-?-) Fulton, oldest son John Fulton ("under 21" therefore all children born after 1760), and Thomas Allen. Ref: York Co. Deed Book E, p 303]

York Co. Taxables 1783 Mary Fulton of Fawn Township, 200 acres, 1 dwelling house, 1 outhouse, 2 horses, 4 horn'd cattle, 7 white inhabitants. Valuation L17.0.0; tax L1.15.0.

On 10 Sept 1794, John Fulton of Fawn Township, Executor of William Fulton of Fawn Township, sold two tracts of land to James Scott for L245: (a) 65-3/4 acres bought of Barnabas Macname by William Fulton and (b) 61 acres 27 perches named "Fulton's Fancy", purchased 15 Mar 1769 by William Fulton.

On 12 April 1796, John Fulton, paid L50 to William Moobery and wife Elizabeth for 129 acres 2-1/2 perches of land surveyed to William Fulton. [See next entry, this tract may be "Troublesome Hills". pfs]

On 13 April 1796, John Fulton, Executor of William Fulton of Fawn Twp, deceased, along with James Fulton, Elijah Fulton, Hugh Fulton, and Mary Fulton, "heirs of William Fulton, deceased" sold "May Field" and "Troublesome Hills" to Robert Creighton.

On 11 May 1796, John Fulton sold 40 acres "Dungannon" (warranted to John Fulton, 30 Jan 1794) to Robert Creighton.

On 29 Apr 1800, Mary Fulton married Benjamin Payne at York Co, PA. [Records of Rev. Robert Cathcard, Presbyterian Minister at York and Hopewell.]

On 26 Sep 1803, John Fulton of Allegheny Co, PA, signed Power of Attorney to his brother Hugh Fulton, authorizing him to sell a tract on Little Muddy Creek, Fawn Township, "formerly owned by his father William Fulton, deceased."

On 17 Nov 1803, Hugh Fulton of Ross Co, OH, "for himself and as attorney for his brothers John [Fulton] and Elijah [Fulton] and Mary, wife of Benjamin Payn [SIC] of Hopewell Township, his sister, heirs of the late William Fulton and of their brother James [Fulton] who died intestate without leaving a wife or children, to James Dorris, for L40, 14 acres, 160 perches, obtained by Application No. 5363 dated 15 March 1769."

Of the seven children named in the Will of William Fulton (Nov 1781), only four approved the 1803 sale: ..John Fulton, of Allegheny Co, PA ..Elijah Fulton, of Ross Co, OH [See below] ..Hugh Fulton, of Ross Co, OH [See below] ..Mary (Fulton) Payne, wife of Benjamin Payne, of Hopewell Twp, York Co, PA

Based on the York Co. deeds, William Fulton's son, James, died intestate, no issue, between 1796 and 1803. No further information regarding brother Alexander Fulton (alive 1783, not mentioned in 1796) or sister Nancy Fulton (alive 1783, not mentioned in 1796). pfs]

I have not proved which John Fulton at Allegheny Co, PA, is the son of William Fulton of Fawn Twp, York Co, PA.

My research partner, the late James L. Fulton, Jr. of Virginia, found additional information regarding brothers Hugh Fulton and Elijah Fulton in the deed books of Franklin County, Ohio.

Elijah Fulton married (est 1805) Elizabeth Henderson. They were the parents of four children: 1. Mary Fulton 2. William Fulton 3. James Fulton 4. Margaret Fulton Elijah Fulton died at Franklin Co, OH, in 1813.

Hugh Fulton married 19 Aug 1806 in OH, Margaret Henderson. They were the parents of four children: 1. Alexander Fulton (b est 1805, see below) 2. Samuel Fulton (b est 1806, see below) 3. David Fulton (b est 1808, see below) 4. James Fulton (b est 1814, see below)

The estate of Hugh Fulton, dec'd, was recorded 3 Nov 1823 at Franklin Co, OH. (Admin John Smith, with Alexander Henderson and Samuel Henderson, securities.) On this same date, Samuel Henderson was appointed guardian of the four minor heirs of Hugh Fulton: Alexander Fulton, age 18; Samuel Fulton, age 17; David Fulton, age 15; and James Fulton, age 9.

Note from descendant Tom Fulton, 1999: Brothers John, James, Hugh, and Elijah Fulton "traveled down the Ohio River to Limestone, KY, where they entered military service." They served under Gen Anthony Wayne and after the treaty of 1795, the four brothers received military pay warrants for land.

  • * * Roberta asks * * *

1) Does anyone have information to support or refute the statement that John Allison's wife was Eleanor Fulton?

No.

A John Allison and Robert Allison recorded PA patents due west of the 309 acre tract warranted to James Fulton (son of Samuel Fulton) of Donegal Twp, Lancaster Co, PA (land near Donegal Springs Presbyterian Church). Moses Comb [McComb?] is an adjacent entry to Allison on the Susquehanna River.

Guin [Gavin?] Allison was the founder of Guweenstown, now Guinston, York Co, PA.

2) If so, any proof that she [Eleanor Fulton] is Robert Fulton Sr's sister?

No.

3) Does anyone have information that William Fulton of Fawn Twp, York Co, PA, married Mary McComb, the daughter of David McComb; and lived on tract

  1. 38 before moving over to Fawn twp?

Good question. William Fulton acquired land in Fawn Township, York Co, PA, as early as 1766. Don't know where he lived prior to 1766.
