William Ellery was a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence as a representative of Rhode Island. In 1764, the Baptists consulted with Ellery and the Congregationalist Reverend Ezra Stiles on writing a charter for the college that became Brown University. However, Ellery and Stiles attempted to give control of the college to the Congregationalists, but the Baptists withdrew the petition until it was rewritten to assure Baptist control. Neither Ellery nor Stiles accepted appointment to the reserved Congregationalist seats on the board of trustees .

    Unnamed deceased wife daughter of Mr. Carey; daughters received their mother's clothes & daughter Susanna received legacy given her by her grandfather Carey.
    Sons: William, Edmund Trowbridge Ellery, Nathaniel C. and George Wanton Ellery. Son Edmund Trowbridge Ellery received money in trust as long as he lives, son Nathaniel C. received money to be delivered to his guardian for his support.
    Daughters: Ann Ellery, Almy Stedman wife of William Stedman, Susannah Ellery, Philadelphia Ellery, Mehetable Redwood, Elizabeth Dana deceased leaving unnamed children, and Lucy Channing. Daughter Almy Stedman received money in trust.
    Grandsons: Richard H. Dana of Cambridge, MA Esq. and Edward T. Channing of Boston, MA Esq. trustees. Francis D. Stedman & Charles Stedman both < 21, the only children now living of William and my daughter Almy Stedman. Children of my son Edmund Trowbridge Ellery, his son Benjamin, his son Conrad Cokely Ellery and his daughter Betsey Dana??
