William's birth certificate states his middle name as "Ignatz", his son William J. and other documents state this was the only time for this spelling. Some documents show birth date May 13, 1892. As a child, William worked with his father moving furniture for 50 cents a day. Entered the Army June 24, 1918. Fought in France during WW I with the 81st Division. Honorable discharge June 21, 1919 as a Private First Class, #3202277. Discharge papers show William 5 feet, 4 1/4 inch in height, blue eyes, light brown hair and his occupation, Railway Conductor. Lost his hearing as a result of the deafening cannon fire.

After the war, he worked for the New York Mass Transit on trolly cars. William lost his job during the Great Depression, this caused Wilhelmina great concern and health problems. Following the depression William worked for the Rail Express Agency (employee #2641). SS # 714-01-2655 issued Jan. 26, 1937 in New York.

William lived at 43 Scholes Street, Brooklyn, New York before his marriage to Wilhelmina. Later moved to 8934-130th St. Richmond Hill, Queens, New York 11418. Married at St. Michael's Church, 225 Jerome Street, Brooklyn, New York. Certificate No. 6841-1922. Certificate shows William born in Germany, this is incorrect.
