Wife of William Dorton

Advisory: there are well over 100 Ancestry Member trees claiming that Mary Elizabeth Fugate, b. 1760, daughter of Colbert Fugate (b. 1759) and Hannah Tate (b. 1772), was the wife of this William Dorton. Obviously, this is not possible.
[Note: the confusion may be from the fact that this William Dorton's SON WILLIAM did marry, on 7 July 1813 in Russell County, Virginia, a Mary Fugate (1794-1860), who WAS the daughter of Colbert Fugate (abt. 1756-abt. 1819) and his wife Hannah Tate (1772-1844). And indeed, in the will of Colbert Fugate, he named his daughter Mary Dorton, providing "$100 in cash, in addition to what I have already advanced to her, and in addition to her equal share with my other children of such devises herein after inserted as shall dispose of any part of my property in that manner"].
If this William Dorton did marry a Fugate, she was clearly not the one listed in the Ancestry (and other) accounts.
