1850 Census (Jefferson County, IL) Not in it.

1850 Roane Co., Tennessee Census DAVIS, Adeline, under Family # 768 DAVIS, Anne E., under Family # 388 DAVIS, Benj. F., Family # 1733 DAVIS, Charles, Family # 1526 DAVIS, David, Family # 888 DAVIS, George, Family # 917 DAVIS, George, Family # 956 DAVIS, George, Family # 1584 DAVIS, James, under Family # 768 DAVIS, James S., Family # 714 DAVIS, James, Family # 1494 DAVIS, John B., Family # 302 DAVIS, John, Family # 164 DAVIS, John, Family # 1465 DAVIS, Mary A., under Family # 768 DAVIS, Robert, Family # 1218 DAVIS, William, Family # 1485

He came to Jefferson County in 1855. Perhaps he was in Wayne Co. in 1850. There is a Wm. Davis in the 1850 Wayne Co. census

No Esmons or Martha Etta Davis Henry are listed in the Guion Miller Indian Roll at the National Archives website which lists all eastern Cherokee Indians. There is a Davis family on the Chapman Roll from 1851 living in Hamilton Co., TN. There are two Wm. Davis' listed in the 1830 Wayne Co., TN census and one in the 1820 Wayne Co., TN census.

There is a Wm. Davis listed as a Revolutionary War Pensioner in Monroe Co., TN. There are 6 Wm. Davis' living in Monroe Co., TN in the 1820 Census and 17 others: Adam, Benjamin, George, James, John R., Jonathon, Lewis, Micaljah, Nathan, Peter, Peter R., Samuel, Sarah, two Thomas', and Wesley. There is a record on the Tngenweb site for a Jonathon Davis who died April 25, 1854 in Monroe County. It said he was 19th inst. in the 72nd year of his age (which would have him born in 1782). There are three Davis' buried in Clemmer Cemetery in Monroe Co., TN which is10 miles north of Madisonville. There is also a Davis Cemetery on Coker Creek but all the graves listed were post-1891.

Question: Could the William Davis living with Wm. and Anna Davis Ford Esmon in the 1850 Monroe Co., TN census be the oldest child of William S. and Martha Davis? Perhaps at age 17, he wasn't interested in moving to Illinois with his parents so he stayed with his aunt and uncle? Or perhaps he stayed with his aunt and uncle to help them move at a later date? This would put Wm. and Martha's marriage date back to about 1832 which would mean that Wm. was 16 years old and Martha was 20! That makes Wm. a little young.

  8. 8.0 8.1 Jefferson, Illinois, United States. Jefferson, Illinois, United States. 1860 U.S. Census Population Census.

Wm. S. Davis is listed in Webber Township. He is 44 years old and born in TN (1816). He is a farmer who has $400 worth of real estate and $225 worth of personal goods. He is listed with wife, Martha, 4 children: George D., Nancy J., Anna F., Mary J. and 2 boarders: George C. (age 27) and Caroline (age 19) Miller. George is a carpenter with $150 personal property, born in Germany. Caroline was born in MO. (I forgot to check if Caroline could be his daughter.)

The daughter's birth locations indicate that the move must have been made about then. Though they do no show in the 1850 Jefferson Co. census, so they may have settled elsewhere in IL first.

Willliam would have joined the regiment while it was with Shrman in the mock pursuit of Hood upon his invasion of Tennessee. Retracing its steps, the regiment reached Atlanta on the 13th of November, and on the 15th it there began with Sherman the triumphant march to the sea...it arrived the 10th of December 1864 at Savannah. Here the regiment went into camp on the rice plantation of Dr. Owen...On the 4th of January 1865, the 31st bade farewell to Savanahh, and shipped on the steamer Harvest Moon, and after the novel experience and sight of a sea voyage, disembarked at Beaufort, South Carolina, where it remained...until the 13th...On the 30th of January, the march began through the Carolinas,...and the regiment came out of the swamps, out of the pine forests, "out of the wilderness," the men ragged, dirty, many of the baregooted, to Goldsborough, North Carolina, where it arrived the 24th of March 1865, and where letters from home and news from the world were received...the men who for 54 days had been without communication with home or the world, and were weary with long marching and fighting. On the 14th of April 1865, the regiment was with the army at Raleigh, North Carolina...the regiment formed part of the host to which (Johnson's army) surrendered. On the 9th of May, the regiment was at Richmond; on the 19th at Alexandria.
