When a lad of 17 William Collins enlisted for service in the war of the Revolution. He was a private under the command of Colonel Jonathan Meigs. Later, in 1779, he served with his uncle, Augustus Collins, who was a major serving as brigade major under Brigadier General Ward. William was a deacon in the Church at Litchfield, Connecticut, while Lyman Beecher was pastor.
