Ball, William - entered service in Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia; granted Pension 1828 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia; died 7/7/1829; married 3/27/1785 to Elizabeth Riley, Frederick County, Virginia, who was granted Pension age 70 there, & died 5/5/1855 there, leaving only child Samuel H.; affidavit made 1854 by daughter Mrs. Elizabeth Massie & soldier's widow, then age 98, Frederick County, Virginia; a Joseph Massie testified for soldier's widow 1838 in Frederick County, Virginia.     I William Ball of Winchester in the Commonwealth of Virginia late a serjeant in the third regiment of light Dragoons Continental line do hereby authorise Joseph Nourse Esq’r of George Town in the District of Columbia to ask for and receive from the Secretary of War any Warrant or Warrants for land to which I may be entitled and to give such receipt or receipts therefor in my name as would be required of me if I were actually present. Given under my hand & seal this seventh day of July 1807

    For the purpose of obtaining the benefit of the act, entitled “An act for the relief of certain surviving Officers and Soldiers of the Army of the Revolution,” approved on the 15th of May 1828, I William Ball of Winchester in the County of Frederick, in the State of Virginia, do hereby declare, that I enlisted in the Continental Line of the Army of the Revolution, for and during the war, and continued in its service until its termination, at which period I was a musician in Capt. Cadwallader Jones troop of Cavalry in Colo. Washingtons Regiment of the Virginia line. And I also declare that I became entitled to receive a reward of Eighty dollars under a resolve of Congress passed the 15th of May 1778.
    And I further declare, that I was not on the fifteenth day of May 1828, on the pension list of the United States, nor at any time before.

    Before me Henry Boteler a justice of the peace in the county of Jefferson in the State of Virginia personally appeared Michael Cookers [pension application W6722] this 26th day of June 1828, of the said county, who verbally made oath that the said William Ball by whom the foregoing declaration is subscribed, did serve in the Revolutionary war in the continental line and service, as a trumpeter in the fourth troop of horse under Capt. William Jones [sic], (who during part of the time of his said service was a prisoner of war, and the said troop under the command of Lieut. Parrot [possibly Barrett]) in the Regiment of Lieut. Colonel William Washington, and that the said William Ball served to the end of the war in such capacity.

    on this twenty sixth day of July Eighteen hundred and thirty eight personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace in the County aforesaid Elizabeth Ball, a resident of Winchester in the County of Frederick aged Seventy years, who, being first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress, passed July 7th 1838, entitled “An act granting half pay and pensions to certain Widows:” That she is the widow of William Ball and who was a Trumpeter in Col. Wm. Washington Regiment of Light Dragoon that she has frequently heard her husband say that he enlisted in Leesburg Loudon [sic: Loudoun] County Virginia for the War and that he served until the close of the war, and that he was in the receipt of a pension [sic] when he died.
    She further declares that she was married to the said William Ball on the twenty fifth day of March Seventeen hundred and eighty five; that her said husband the aforesaid William Ball died on the seventh day of July Eighteen hundred and twenty nine; that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January, seventeen hundred and ninety-four, viz: at the time above stated Sworn to and subscribed, on the day and year above written Elizabeth herXmark Ball

    NOTE: In the file is a copy of the record of the marriage of William Ball and Elizabeth Riley in Frederick County on 27 Mar 1785 said to be in the handwriting of Rev. Alexander Balmain, Rector of the Parish of Frederick. In a document dated 16 Mar 1843 Elizabeth Ball’s age is given as 75, and on 12 Sep 1848 it is given as about 86. In the file is a power of attorney dated 7 Aug 1854 by William Ball’s widow, Elizabeth Ball, and his daughter, Elizabeth Massie, to obtain any benefits for his services. On an application for bounty land dated 3 Mar 1855, Elizabeth Ball’s age is given as 98. A document in the file states that she died on 5 May 1855, leaving Samuel H. Ball as the only surviving child.
