On his Attestation form he signed as Wm. Anderson. His middle name was given as Alexandra, but some other forms included in his military fileS2 give it as Alexander. I assume he got tired of correcting the bureaucracy or possibly did not even know they had made the error. At least one form was manually corrected to Alexandra.

His military file contains a file card for Anderson, R (Pvt) of the 21st attalion who was killed in action by shell fire on 11 Apr 1916. It was misfiled in William's file.

The following timeline is based upon information contained in his military file:

  • 28 Oct 1916 - enlisted, joined 249th Overseas Battalion. Gave his occupation as "teacher."
  • 02 Dec 1916 - Took his medical examination and was found fit for duty. He was described as having a fair complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.
  • 29 Jun 1917 to 17 Jul 1917 - in the Valcartier Camp hospital with a mild case of the Mumps.
  • 01 Jan 1918 - effective this date he assigned $15 of his pay to Mrs. Maizie Young of Carlisle (sic), Sask
  • 18 Feb 1918 - Embarked from Halifax on the H.M.S. Saxonia
  •  ?? Mar 1918 - promoted to acting Corporal
  • 04 Mar 1918 - Disembarked at Liverpool. Taken on Strength in 15th Canadian Reserve Battalion at Bramshott
  •  ?? Apr 1918 - promoted to provisional Corporal
  • 10 May 1918- Taken on Strength - 1st C.M.R. (Canadian Mounted Rifles)
  • 29 Aug 1918 - received a G.S.W. (gunshot wound) which fractured his leg and was admitted to No. 7 Casualty Clearing Station He died of his wound the same day.

    W A Anderson, Private 106918, 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles (Saskatchewan Regt.) who died on Thursday, 29th August 1918.

    He is buried at the Ligny-St. Flochel British Cemetery, Averdoingt, Pas de Calais, France. Grave reference II.F.8. This was a cemetery for casualty clearing centers. It is located about 24 km from Arras.

    William died of a shrapnel wound that fractured his thigh during an attack on Vis-en-Artois. "He was immediately attended to and evacuated to Field Ambulance, via Battalion Aid Post, and from there was removed to No. 7 Casualty Clearing Station where he succumbed to his wounds."

    He was a member of the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles.
