About William Ambrose

Some researchers believe that William Henry Ambrose was a son of Matthias Ambrose (1696-1784) of Maryland, but others have shed doubt upon that claim. More research is necessary to establish what relationship may exist between the two. Certainly the naming of his eldest son as "Matthias" may cause some researchers to make the logical conclusion, but more than naming patterns is needed to prove kinship.

I don't know how much help this will be, but I'll send it along. My ancestor, Henry Ambrose 1740-1811 born in Md, died in Berkley Co., W. Va. He had two sons who, in my records, moved to Champaign Co., Ohio; Frederick b 1781, d June 12, 1849, and Jacob (no dates) went from Champaign Co., Ohio to Mason Co., Ill. Jim, just happened to see your query on the three Ambrose brothers who went to Ohio. I have in my tree a William Henry Ambrose b.abt 1740 in Frederick Co. Md. who had brothers-Jacob, Frederick, Mathias and others who were the sons of Mathias Ambrose, b. 2 10 1689 in Germany-Alsace-Lorriane, to Frederick Co., Md. , m. Maria Ann Catharine Spohn, Germany. Jacob was b. about 1731. There are other Jacobs, Williams, Henrys among his early descendants. Jacob, son of the immigrant-Mathias, was a miller. Jacob also had son Jacob. Many of the Ambrose's are buried in Peter Apple's Churchyard in Thurmont, Frederick Co., Maryland. Don't know if any of this is of interest to you. - Connie Moore
