Whitaker Dring was baptised on 14th March 1819 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, son of a gate keeper called Richard Dring and his wife Sarah. The family lived at Heckington Fen, to the east of the village.

The 1841 census finds Whitaker living on High Street in Heckington and working as a journeyman saddler.

On 26th July 1843, aged 24, he married Mary Turner at Heckington. At the time of their marriage he was living at South Kyme, a village just north of Heckington, and they settled there for the first few years after their marriage, having five children born there between 1844 and 1854, although one died young in 1851. They also appear at South Kyme in the 1851 census, with Whitaker described as a master saddler employing one man.

In the mid-1850s the family moved from South Kyme to the nearby village of Billinghay, where they had another three children between 1856 and 1861. The 1861 census finds the family living on King Street in Billinghay.

Whitaker died at Billinghay on 19th June 1862, aged 43. He was buried back in his native parish of Heckington. Mary survived him by nearly 29 years.
