shown in the 1871 Census of Shotts, Co. Lanark 655/bk8/p25 to be an unmarried coal miner age 18

based on the 1875 Scottish statutory index of marriages of Slamannan, Co. Stirling 489-24 on the 26th of November 1875 at Limerigg. After Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland Walter (coal miner - bachelor) aged 23 of Drumbowe was married to Martha Johnston (domestic servant - spinster) aged 22 of Drumbowe by clergyman Archibald Walker, Meadowfield with witnesses Richard Robertson and Christina Johnston

According to the 1910 census of the US, Walter and Martha immigrated into the US in 1880 and in 1910 they owned their farm free of mortgage. The following is a transcription of a handwritten letter int he possession of Margaret Williams. The author is unknown. Except for the Clark City location, the information in this letter is consistent with the information found in other sources. There is no Clark City, Illinois shown in the atlas. As can be seen in the biography on George Robertson, it is possible that the correct town in Rock Island, Illinois. "Walter and Martha Robertson were married in the 1800's in Glasgow, Scotland; three sons were born, Walter, Gavin, and George. Around 1883 they emmigrated ot the USA and settled at Clark City, Illinois. Here daughter Margaret was born. Theyh soon moved on to Nebraska and settled in Custer county. Here they pioneered using oxen at first instead of horses for field work. They also were roade by the children; here a son John and a daughter Martha were born. In April 1912 he arrived by train accompanied by his duather Martha and small daughter Jessie at Grassy Lake. He had acquired a homestead straight south of Grassy Lake and 4 miles west of Louis and Margaret's homestead. Martha's husband Jess came with settlers effect car and homesteaded in Oyen district. Grandma never came up."
