From 1917 to 1919 he was in the Army and was in WWI. He entered service Oct. 7, 1917, 308th Motor Supply Train Co. D, 83rd Division, Camp Sherman and Camp Mills, L.I. Service overseas. Co D 308 Motor Supply Train to 17 Apr 1919; Supply Company mechanic Unit 1 Army Post Office 762 to Discharge Private, first class 12 Dec 1917; Private 23 Oct 1918; Private, first class 10 June 1919. American Expeditionary Forces 13 Jun 1918 to 12 July 1919. Honorable discharge 26 July 1919. Source: Ohio Military Men, 1917-18.

After he and Helen divorced he joined the Air Force, retiring from Edwards Air Force Base.

In 1927, he was living in Canton OH when sister Edna died. In 1935 he was in Ft. Benning, Ga, and in 1940 he was at Langley Air Force base, Virginia, with the 41st Reconnaissance Squadron GHQ Air Force.. In 1957, he was living in Edwards, CA when sister Florence died. For ten or more years before his death he lived in Chapala, Guadalajara Mexico. The Mendoza family were close friends.

His daughter Jeanne wrote, "After my father died I went to Guadalajara and buried him in Chapala where he lived at one time. All his Mexican friends were there and instead of putting him in an enormous Vet grave yard in LA where there would only be me to visit occasionally, I elected to leave him with his friends. I saw him very infrequently after my parents were divorced (when) I was 5...We went to the funeral, held in the cemetery in Chapala with all of his friends standing around and the military band played taps, all very old and all not very good. It was a beautiful day in Chapala and the cemetery was positively charming -- best funeral I ever attended." Cause of death was heart failure after a fall.
