Virgil Richey A memorial service and reception for Virgil Lloyd Richey of Biggs will be conducted at 1 P.M. May 19 at Seamans Lodge in Nevada City. Mr. Richey died Sunday, May 5, at home. He was 83. He was born October 3rd. 1918, in Kokomo, Ind., to Frank and Laura Richey. He served in the U.S.Army. He moved to Washington, Ca. in 1948 and worked in a lumber mill, and as a timber faller off and on for several years. He moved to Nevada City in 1949, drove a school bus for five years, also worked on a scrapper clearing the area on Hwy. 20 for the freeway between Grass Valley and Nevada City, while working for Davey Tree Const. He then put in the sprinkler system , and plants along the new freeway. He married Stella May Risner in 1948. He worked as a laborer for 25 years for Hunt Construction. He moved to Yuba City in 1980 and moved to Biggs in 1999. He was a founder of the Nevada City little league, He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and playing pool. He is survived by sons Lloyd Fording, of Bakersfield, John Fording of Fresno, Ronald Sturgell of Auburn, John Sturgell of Oroville, Michael Sturgell of Nevada City, and Steven and Kirk both of Biggs; daughters Renee Whaley of Auburn and Sue Courdert of Linda; sister Thelma Clevenger of Muncie, In.; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella, in 1991. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nevada City Little League in c/o Sorensen's Affordable Mortuary, 587 Country Drive, Chico Ca. 95928.
