In 1775 he signed the Articles of Association. During the Revolution he gained the rank of Ensign in the 2nd New York on 21 November 1776, 2nd Lieutenant on 1 Sep 1778, and retired as Captain, 1 Jan 1781. During his service he was with Washington at Valley Forge and with the expedition of Gen. John Sullivan against the Six Nations in 1779. An officer of the Continental Army, he was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati.
