Thomas Ward was baptised on 6th October 1776 at Somerby by Grantham in Lincolnshire, son of Sarah Ward, formerly Lister, and her husband William Ward, a labourer. Shortly after Thomas's birth the family moved to Belton, where Thomas's younger brother Luke was baptised in 1779. They moved again some time between 1779 and 1783 to Great Hale. Thomas's father died in 1783 at Great Hale, when Thomas was only seven years old. Thomas's mother remarried in 1786 to a William Burks, who thus became Thomas's stepfather. William Burks died in 1792.

On 30th November 1797, aged 21, Thomas married Ann Barker, who was originally from Woodhall, nearly twenty miles north of Great Hale. They married at Great Hale and remained there after their marriage, having seven children baptised there between 1798 and 1815. Thomas worked as a tailor.

Thomas's mother died in 1823.

Thomas died aged about 62, being buried at Great Hale on 21st September 1838. Ann survived him by nearly eighteen years.
