Revolutionary Pension Application

  • Revolutionary War Pension Claim # W3889: Thomas Townsend allowed pension of $80 per annum, executed Nov 06, 1832. Served in South Carolina Regiments commanded by Col. Thomas Sumpter, Col. Henry Lee, and Gen. Francis Marion. Pension Claim No. W3889 for Revolutionary War Pensions filed in the Inferi or Court of Habersham County, Georgia on July 1, 1833. The Court approved the pension and it was paid until his death on February 17, 1836. The records indicate that he was a private in the War of t he Revolution in the South Carolina Continental line. His sworn stateme nt detailed his military service. He was allowed a pension of $80 per annum on his application dated November 6, 1832 at that time he was a reside nt of Habersham County, Georgia. Thomas Townsend lived in various places in South Carolina and Georgia, eve ntually settling in Habersham County, Georgia. The part of Habersham County became Lumpkin County and Thomas died there February 17, 1836. He enlisted during 1775 under Captain John Wallace and Colonel Neal and was in the skirmish at Cane Brake. Next, he was under Captain James Duff and Colonel Sumter and was in the skirmish at Bolton's landing. He was in the battle at Black Hole or Horseshoe against the Cherokee Indians. Thereafter, he was with Colonel Watson and was in a skirmish with the Creek Indians at Rock's Comfort. Next, he was under Captains Samuel Carr and George Lidell and was in the battles at Fish Dam Ford and Blackstock's Plantation. He was also in the skirmish at Rutledge's Ford and the battle at Reeds Branch. In 1781, he was under Colonels Bratton and Mottett and Captains Chambers and Anderson. He was in the battles at Biggin Church and Hughe 's Bridge. Until the end of the war, he served under Captain Anderson and Colonels Hawthorn and Hill. In a Certificate issued August 27, 1833, to begin March 4, 1831, shows Thomas Townsend of Habersham County in the state of Georgia was a Private in the regiment commanded by Colonel Sumpter in the South Carolina line for 2 years The first U. S. Census taken in 1790, list Thomas Townsend as head of family in the 96th Abbeville District, South Carolina. The same census lists Repentance Townsend there also. Thomas' widow stated in her declaration, made April 8, 1844 in Gilmer County, Georgia, that her first husband John Stephens was killed by Indians and she married Thomas Townsend on December 16, 1778 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. She also stated that Thomas died February 19,1836 in Lumpkin County, Georgia.
