Facts and Events
Thomas’ son, William Henry, in 1869 at the age of 20 was receiving, twice a year, a 28£ dividend from what was originally the Birkenhead, Lancashire & Cheshire Junction Railroad as well as other investment incomes totally 195£ per year, equivalent to about 19,000 dollars in today’s purchasing power. This was most certainly inherited income, indicating that William Henry’s father was probably a successful businessman and investor. When Thomas’ wife Miranda died in 1871, she was identified as the widow of Thomas Staples, gentleman. Apparently a descendant of Thomas’ granddaughter, Mabel Staples, has a diary written by Thomas. Unfortunately the information in the diary is unavailable to Thomas’ descendants for the reason that the diary is too fragile to photocopy or scan. Perhaps someday it will be digitized before the diary disintegrates or becomes illegible.
