References
  1. Blacksmith
In the 1850 census, Thomas says he is a blacksmith. David Spencer's will leaves to his son, Thomas J. Spencer, four acres of land "around and including his shop..." This leads the author to believe that Thomas is David's son, and that he was already in the blacksmith trade when the will was written.
  2. In the census of 1840, the family of Thomas J. Spencer has two males under 5 (Maxwell would have been 3 and Joseph would have been 1), 1 male 20-30, unknown, 1 male 30-40 (Thomas would have been 31), and 1 female 20-30 (Sinia would have been 23). The family has no slaves.
  3. none
Thomas owned no property, according to the 1850 census. This is odd, because he was given four acres of land, including his shop, according to his father's will. David Spencer's will said that the two sons, "Thomas and Joshua should have my land ..." What happened in the years from 1835 to 1850 to cause Thomas to be without property?
  4. Thomas J. Spencer is 41, living with his wife, Sinai A., 33, and children, Maxwell L., 13, Joseph W., 11, Sarah E., 9, Thomas J., 4, George, 3, and Mary Ann, 3/12. FHC #442,979
  5. 5.0 5.1 A settlement. dated 28 July 1866 is recorded with "J. H. Spencer, Adm. of T. J. Spencer, decd." and distributed $168.23. This came after Sinia Spencer (T. J.'s wife) died, sometime around 23 July 1866. Her will was dated 14 June 1866, and she knew she was in bad health. Thomas Jefferson wasn't listed in 1860 index, so I believe he died sometime between 1850 and 1860, even though his estate is administered after Sinia's death.
