Information on Thomas Parmenter

From "The History of Beaufort County, South Carolina: 1514-1861", by Lawrence Sanders Rowland, Alexander Moore, George C. Rogers:

On August 1, 1716, the Port Royal frontier suffered a serious reversal when a party of Yemassee ambushed Major Henry Quintyne, new commander of the Port Royal scout boat, and his entire crew. Among the dead were Major Quintyne; Captain Thomas Parmenter, one of the first settlers on Port Royal Island and a veteran scout; and Thomas Simmons. Only Dr. Rose, left for dead with a cut across his nose, escaped the massacre. [pg. 99}

One of the earliest and most numerous of the local families were the Parmenters, Joseph and Thomas Parmenter had immigrated to South Carolina with their father, Philemon Parmenter, in 1683. Between 1697 and 1704, both brothers acquired land among the sea islands. Lieutenant Thomas Parmenter was killed by the Yemassee Indians in 1716, but his brother, Joseph, also a veteran of the Yemassee War and later a scoutboat commander, survived the war. In 1733, Joseph Parmenter owned a lot in Beaufort and nine hundred acres on Port Royal Island. [pg. 168-169] (Note: additional information on Joseph Parmenter listed in this source).
