James Thomas was born before Nancy married Philip and the name of his f ather is unknown. He lived and died at a home he built (or had built) on Obey's Creek a s hort distance northeast of theold Irvington school house and church. T his house was built on land he had bought from Abraham Compton II, his f ather-in-law. The house is still in good and livable condition and is n ow occupied by Claude Gillenwater (1990s).This is the home where Sara h Elizabeth McConnell (Thomas' 12th child) and Samuel Elbert Smith, her h usband, raised their family. Of course there had been changes made in t he house over the years. This old house was at one time a U. S. Post O ffice (1902-1929) named Mack, VA. This post office was on the Star Rou te from Gate City, VA to Jessie, VA and Samuel E. Smith was its only po stmaster. On the northeast of this old home is believed to be the final resting p lace of Thomas McConnell and other family members; however, the only gr ave markers that could be found were for Samuel Smith and his wife. All t he graves are overgrown with vines, briars, and bushes. |
