According to the 1850 census, both their ages were listed as 29. At th at time there were 6 children listed for this couple. At the time the 1 860 census was taken, there were 9 children whose names were Nancy, Est er, Margaret,Thomas, Mary, Robert, Rachel, Malinda, and James. Over the years it had been said and written that this couple moved away t o Kentucky before the Civil War, but now we know from land records and f rom what a great-granddaughter says that they settled in Lee County, VA o n the south side of Little Black Mountain where Keokee now stands. In 1 985 the Keokee Extension Homemakers published a booklet "The Village of K eokee - a Bicentennial Report" and on page 58it stated "In the late 18 40's Brackenberry (Berry) McConnell and his familymigrated to Crab Orc hard, Lee County, VA from Scott County, VA."
