Thomas Linney's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 6th September 1779 when he married Elizabeth Franklin at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire. Between 1779 and 1801 they appear to have had five children baptised at Leighton Buzzard, although there are some quite large gaps between some of the children.

Elizabeth died in 1803. Thomas survived her by 22 years and was buried at Leighton Buzzard on 15th September 1825. He was said to have been 72 years old when he died.

   There are a few baptisms at Leighton Buzzard which may be this Thomas, or none of them may be him:
   ch. 26 Oct 1746: Thomas son of George & Sarah Linnell
   ch. 15 Feb 1754: Thomas son of William & Sarah Linnell
   ch. 25 Dec 1763: Thomas son of William & Mary Linny
   (Linnell and Linney appear to have been used interchangeably in the Leighton Buzzard registers around this time.)
