Catherine Linney was baptised on 31st October 1779 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Linney, formerly Franklin, and her husband Thomas Linney. She appears to have been the eldest of at least five children. Catherine's mother died in 1803.

On 21st June 1804, aged 24, Catherine married John Townsend. She died less than three years later, aged 27, being buried at Leighton Buzzard on 12th June 1807. Her burial record describes her as being poor. Catherine's father outlived her. John remarried three years after Catherine's death.
