Thomas was enumerated as Stonewall J. Jackson in the 1870 and 1880 census; but when he was married by 1900 he began using his 'proper' name of Thomas Jefferson Jackson as given on the undertaker's record. Throughtout his married life he lived next door to his brother John Rushing Jackson. They are both listed as sons of John R. and Annie Elizabeth Jackson on the undertaker's records.

Thomas named two of his children after his brother John and John's wife, Willery.
