Through the census years the birth state of John R. Jackson varies; sometimes Alabama, sometimes Mississippi. It appears that his parents migrated from Alabama to Mississippi sometime between 1864 and 1868.

Throughtout his married life he lived next door to his brother Thomas Jefferson (Stonewall) Jackson. They are both listed as sons of John R. and Annie Elizabeth Jackson on the undertaker's records and lived side by side on Court Street. His brother Thomas named two of his children after John and his wife Willery.
