Thomas Hawtree was baptised on 19th April 1776 at the parish church of St Stephen's in the town of St Albans, Hertfordshire. He was the son of a carpenter named John Hawtree and his wife Mary.
On 15th July 1797, aged 21, Thomas was married at Kimpton, a few miles north of St Albans, to Elizabeth Marshall, who was 19. She was from Chiltern Green, a hamlet in the parish of Luton in Bedfordshire, but very close to the border with Kimpton. At the time of their marriage both were described as living in Kimpton.
After their marriage, they moved into Luton, where their first son, John, was baptised in 1798. They then moved a few miles south into Middlesex, where they lived for a few years at Pinner before settling in Edmonton. They appear to have had at least seven children. In Edmonton they appear not to have lived in the village itself, but in the hamlets around Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill. The 1841 census finds Thomas and Elizabeth living with their youngest son, James, at Hoppers Lane in Edmonton, which was listed in the census after Palmers Green. Thomas was described as an agricultural labourer. Their son Thomas and his family were living next door.
Elizabeth died in 1842, aged 64. The following year, Thomas remarried. His second wife was a Sarah Etridge. The 1851 census finds Thomas and Sarah living at the village of Southgate, which was still part of the parish of Edmonton.
Thomas died in 1853, aged 77. He was buried at the parish church of All Saints in Edmonton, with the burial record recording his last abode as the Union Workhouse.
