Information on Thomas Carter

From "The Carter Family" by Kim Carter Stewart:

Captain Thomas Carter Sr., born 1630-31, emigrated from London, England, to Nansemond Co., VA. in 1650. He purchased a large plantation on the, Rappahonnock River in "Barford" of Lancaster County. Captain Carter was an ally of King Charles I and found it necessary to flee England for his own safety when that Monarch lost his kingdom by decapitation.

  Captain Carter married Katherine Dale in 1670. According to immigrant records, she was his second wife. Katherine was born in 1652 to Major Edward Dale and Diana Skipworth Dale. Major Dale was a Royalist refugee who also immigrated to America when Cromwell grasped the reins of government.
  Captain Carter passed the remainder of his life in Lancaster Co., filling many offices of honor and trust. These offices included Captain of the Lancaster Co. Militia, 1667; Commissioner of the Lancaster Co. Court, 1663; House of Burgess, 1667; and Vestryman of Christ Church and St. Mary's. He held some position almost continuously while Gov. Spottswood was executive.
  Captain Carter was known to have reared a large family before his death in 1700. Catherine's death closely followed his in 1703. Court 1663;

Thomas' birthdate is calculated as 1630 from his death entry which states he deid 22 October 1722 aged about 70 years. This may not be accurate as he left and wife and three children in England when he came to America. He is proven to be in Virginia by 1653. His parents were married 2 July 1618; he was therefore born between 1619 and 1630. Thomas came first to Nansemond County, Virginia, then to Lancaster County. He first appeared in Lancaster County records in the tax list of 1653 at St. Mary's White Chapel Parish. Thomas referred to as "Gentleman", "Captain" and "Senior".
