In Suffolk County Deeds (Vol XII, Page 60 dated 30 July, 1679) it is recorded that on the death of his son Joseph, Thomas Baker became administer of his estate and names sons John Baker of Roxbury, son-in-law, Jonathan Jackson and his wife Elizabeth Baker, Seabis Jackson and his wife Sarah Baker and Roger Adams and his wife Mary Baker. This document proves that the author of the History of Newton was incorrect about spouses of the Jackson men. They were indeed the daughters of Thomas Baker of Roxbury. Also recorded in Suffolk County (Vol XIV Page 145, 23 Feb 1685) John Baker of Roxbury and his wife Mary, Jonathan Jackson of Boston, Seabis Jackson of Cambridge and Roger Adams of Boston sold land to Samuel Ruggles and his son including “the mansion house and orchard wherein Old father Baker Lately inhabited in Roxbury.”

Guy Ellis Baker, Esq of Albany, New York was the premier genealogist of the Bakers of the Roxbury Colony. He contended that Thomas Baker of Roxbury was as the son of Thomas Baker (c 1557 – 1625) and Alice Lemon, grandson of Sir Richard Baker (c 1527 - 1594) and Catherine Terrell and great-grandson of Sir John Baker (1488 – 1558) and Elizabeth Dingley. This is no contemporary evidence that suggest that he was in any way related to John Baker of Ipswich as some earlier genealogists have claimed. Indeed extensive Y Chromosome sequencing has shown that this Baker family originated in Kent and West Sussex, England with the oldest matches in the area of the town of Battle, West Sussex, England. This is consistent with the research published by Guy Ellis Baker.

  7.   Disambiguation.

While no genealogies has ever confused these men some Internet Trees certainly do so take care. This is the Baker family of Roxbury, MA that starts with Thomas Baker (1608 - 1683) of Roxbury and his only wife Elizabeth. Don't confuse him with Thomas Baker of Boston, Blacksmith who married Sarah Carr -or- Thomas Baker of Rhode Island who married Sarah (LNU)..
