information provided partially by Robert Slutz

According to both Bill Mitchell and Doris Moser Keener, the following incident occurred: "Apparently there had been bad feeling between Theophilus Gordon and his father-in-law, Robert Render. Theophilus was a railroad laborer in his younger years and one day happened to be working on a section of track near the farm home of Robert Render. He saw Render working around his property and called to him with insults and curses, much to the amusement of his fellow section workers. After a while Render went into his house, came out shortly and walked over to where Theophilus was working. He said "Have you got anything else to say?" to which Theophilus replied with a curse. Render then pulled out a pistol and shot Theophilus in the shoulder. Theophilus survived and Render got several years probation."
