Susannah Twidell was born on 8th August 1822 and baptised the following month at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of a labourer called Richard Twidell and his wife Sophia, and the family lived at Gustard Wood, a hamlet to the north of the parish.
On 8th November 1845, aged 23, Susannah married a widower called William Swallow. He was fourteen years her senior, and had several young children from his first marriage. Susannah and William do not appear to have had any children together. The 1851 census finds them living in Harpenden at Bread Croft. She was working as a straw plaiter, whilst he was an agricultural labourer.
Some time between 1851 and 1861 it would appear that Susannah and William separated. He returned to Wheathampstead, whilst she moved to Luton, living initially with her parents and then with her sister Sophia, who had married a Charles Bunyan.
Each census from 1871 to 1901 finds Susannah living with Sophia and Charles Bunyan at a different address in Luton. In 1871 she claimed to be unmarried and gave her name as Twidell rather than Swallow. She worked variously as a straw plaiter, laundress and charwoman. Over in Wheathampstead, William Swallow died in 1883.
Susannah lived to be 84 years old. She died in 1906 in Luton.
