He married Susan Hass the same year...Mr. Byerly was a straightforward, honorable man, and was well known in McArthur. He was a carpenter by trade."

From Vinton County Wonderland of Ohio, pg. 27: "A well-known mechanic - a carpenter by the name of Jacob Byerly located in Swan township in 1820. He was well-known in particular because his wife was the largest woman in a whole section of the country -- at the time of her death she weighed 330 pounds and they had ten children. Mr. Byerly evidently had a heavy responsibility."
