Born at home in Roman Place, Leeds. Her Mum was very small and was advised not to have more children. She lived in Edinburgh for a few years as a small child, she went to a small private school there, where she had a friend called Margot. She lived near twin boys with strong scots accents and apparently talked like them if she played with them for long and then her Mum couldn't understand her!! She moved back to Leeds to 4, St. Margaret's Ave, and went to Allerton High School. She left when WW2 started and got a job on a switchboard in Leeds. She spent half the war going to dances in Roundhay Park mansion!

At the end of the war she went to teachers' training college on a quick course designed to train lots of new teachers rapidly. Her old head had to write her a reference as she hadn't taken her school certificate. She trained at Wall Hall near Watford and thoroughly enjoyed it. She went to Trafalgar square on VE day with other girls from college. She and her Mum were both heavily involved in the Girl Guides. She was a captain for many years and then a district commissioner in the Leeds area. After moving to Southport in 1969 she gave it up. She was interested in nature and crafts.
