Facts and Events
As a small child she was staying with her grandma- Polly, when Queen Victoria died. Polly took her to London to see the funeral, the horses all wore mufflers over their feet so that they were quiet. The streets were lined by cavalry men and Olive and Polly were behind the horses and couldn't see very well so Polly took Olive by the hand and ducked under a horse's belly to watch as the cortege went past. Olive said that Polly was small and she herself was only 5ft 1. She lived with her grandparents in London after her mother died (when she was 13) because her step mum Jane didn't want a ready made family. As a young girl she often modelled for her dad and possibly that accounts for her lack of prudishness and the way she brought me (Stella) up to admire sculptures and paintings, there used to be nude photos of her from which carvings were made, including the writing desk door panel. Did lots of voluntary work. Was a Guider and member of the trefoil guild, I (Margot ) used to go to Guide Headquarters in Leeds with her for lunch occasionally, before I started school I think, ( she looked after me in the day until Janet was born because Mum was still teaching) I used to like to help clear away and remember clearing away the salt pots and putting them on a trolley in a store room. There were Green canvas steel frame chairs. By all accounts she was a very nice lady. |
