Stan was the second of five children. The 1901 census finds him living with his parents and siblings at 33 Albert Road, Luton, which was the same street his paternal grandparents were living in at the time. Stan's elder brother, Ralph, died during the Great War. Ralph's father and girlfriend, Lily Wildman, were able to visit him in France where he was dying in a field hospital in Le Treport of his wounds.

Following Ralph's death, and after the war was over, Lily Wildman and Stan were married. They had one daughter.
