Stanley George Marshall was born on 26th November 1896 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a straw hat sewer named Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Kempson, and her husband John Marshall, a straw hat blocker and bricklayer. Stan was the second of five children. The 1901 census finds him living with his parents and siblings at 33 Albert Road, Luton, which was the same street his paternal grandparents were living in at the time. The 1911 census finds him living at 44 Cambridge Street, Luton, which was the same street his maternal grandparents were living in then. In 1911, aged 14, Stan was working in an iron foundry.
Stan's elder brother, Ralph, died during the Great War. Ralph's father and girlfriend, Lily Wildman, were able to visit him in France where he was dying in a field hospital in Le Treport of his wounds.
Following Ralph's death, and after the war was over, Lily Wildman and Stan were married. They had one daughter.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Stan and Lil were living at 71 Harcourt Street in Luton. Stan was working as a steamer of felt hats. Lil died in Luton in 1950, aged 54.
Stan outlived Lil by twenty years. He died in Norfolk in 1970, aged 73.
