At his brother Stewart's wedding in 1925
George Marshall was born on 25th May 1904 at Luton in Bedfordshire, the youngest of five children of a bricklayer and hat blocker named John Marshall and his wife Elizabeth Kempson, a straw plaiter. The 1911 census finds the family living in a five roomed house at 44 Cambridge Street, Luton. George's eldest brother, Ralph, was killed in action in France in the First World War.
In 1925, George was best man and a witness for his brother Stewart (Jack)'s marriage, and appears in the wedding photograph. In 1933, aged 29, George married Edna Elsie Groom. They did not have any children.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, George and Edna were living at 73 Cambridge Street in Luton. George was recorded as working as a fitter in experimental machine building and general engineering. He was also serving as an Air Raid Precautions warden. Luton was targeted for bombing several times, due to its heavy industries and the contribution they were making to the war effort.
In June 1945, less than a month after the Allied victory in Europe, George's father John died. George acted as informant, with his father's death certifcate recording that George at that time was still living at 73 Cambridge Street.
George was a keen gardener and was presented with a plaque by the Luton Gardens Association "for long & valued service". Edna died in 1986, aged 79. George outlived her by just over three years. At the time of his death, he was living at 10 Robert Allen Court on Langley Street, a block of sheltered accommodation for the elderly that had been built in 1984. Robert Allen Court is within a couple of hundred yards of Cambridge Street where George had spent much of his life. George died on 30th May 1989, five days after his 85th birthday.
