Edna Elsie Groom was born on 9th December 1906 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of Amelia Groom, formerly Chambers, and her husband Herbert Charles Groom, who was a labourer in the testing department at an engineering works. The 1911 census finds the family living in a four-roomed house at 45 Duke Street, Luton.
Edna married George Marshall in 1933, when she was 26. The couple did not have any children. At the outbreak of the Second World War Edna and George were living at 73 Cambridge Street in Luton, and Edna was working as a straw hat machinist.
Edna died in 1986, aged 79. George outlived her by just over three years.
