About Stan Coop

Stanley Glen "Stan" Coop was born 30 March 1930 in Iowa, son of a mid-western farmer, Walter Austin Coop (1900-1970) and his wife Mona R. Agans (1908-1990).

Stan started his professional career at Supervalu in Iowa as a Grocery Buyer and moved his family to South Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California in the 1960's.
There, he joined Ralphs Grocery Company in 1966, and worked his way up through various positions in marketing and purchasing to Buyer/Merchandiser, then to Vice President, Dairy/Deli and later to Vice President, Grocery/Liquor. Stan left Ralphs in 1980 to form his own export company, Ocean Span, Inc., but a year later, he was offered the position as Vice President of Perishables on the broker side of the food business with local Southern California food broker, Crown BBK.

In 1983, Stan decided to go into business for himself again, forming Pacific Cellars, Ltd., a wine storage and distribution business which he built into one of the largest wine storage operations, contracting with over 40 wine producers and importers of fine wines. Two years later, Stan was offered a position back in the food brokerage business, with Bradshaw, Inc. - South, where he served as its Vice President - Deli for over two years.

Stan Coop jumped over to the manufacturing side of the food industy in 1987, when he assumed the position of Vice President of Johnston Foods, Inc., which at the time was one of the largest yogurt and soft frozen manufacturers in the Western United States, then run by Merle "Conkey" Johnston. Afterwards, he joined brokerage company, Food Brokers, Inc., as its Vice President of Deli in 1988.

During his career, Stan Coop was very active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. Stan was first recognized by the Deli Council in February 1970, when he received its "Big Cheese" Award, and again later was recognized for his leadership in the Deli industry, when we was awarded the first "Retailer of the Year" Award in 1975.

In 1974, Stan was elected as the 15th President of the Deli Council and again proved his leadership capabilities in directing the DDBC's Board of Directors to a successful year. Stan continued to be an active supporter of the DDBC throughout the years and in recognition of that on-going leadership and support received the DDBC's "Hall of Fame" Award in 2004. Throughout his career, Stan Coop was known as a tremendous asset to every company that he worked, as a mentor to many coming up in the food industry and as a friend to all that knew him.

Stan Coop passed away on 18 September 2007 at age 77. He was survived by his wife Dena, their six children, nineteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
