- “Indenture made 16th February 1743 between James Bankhead of Parish Washington County Westmoreland, Guardian appointed by Court to said Spence Monroe & by his consent of one part & Robert Walker of Hanover Parish King George County Joyner of other part … hath bound sd. Spence an Apprentice to Walker … to live for space of five years from these present & his Negro Muddy for space of six years … both to lean trade of a joyner … ” The original indenture was signed by James Bankhead, Spence Monroe, Robert Walker and Francis Williams “at the court held 2nd March 1743.” It is probable that the Spence Monroe named in this indenture is James Monroe’s father.
