Sijbren Rienk van der Leij, called Siebie, was a civil engineer. He married Thelma Forssman and had 2 sons, Rienk Sijbren and Gustav Carl. They first lived in Belfast Transvaal, then Robertson in the Western Cape. He then worked for the Sundays River Irrigation Board and was resposnible for the building of the canals from Lake Mentz to the sea. Later he moved to Kroonstad in the Freestate where he worked for the Dept. of Water Affairs. He retired and lived in Benoni, Gauteng, until his death. During the war years, he served in the Special Services Battalion, SA Engineering Corps, in East and North Africa, and Italy.
