He came to South Africa from Arnhem. He was studying for a PhD and was chosen to play ice hockey for The Netherlands. He went to his professor to notify him that he was required to play a national match in Switzerland and was told that if he was absent, he would not be allowed to graduate. Rienk played the match for The Netherlands (in about 1902),and subsequently emigrated to South Africa as part of the government's scheme to attract professionals. On 21 July 1917, he was appointed as headmaster of the secondary school in Vrede, Orange Free State, a position he held until 1931. He returned to Pretoria where he started a correspondence college.
