The Reminiscences of John W. Robinson, 12 Jan 1877:
Mrs. McCredie was the daughter of Maj. James McKinney, a Kentuckian who imparted to his children something of the self-reliance, moral courage & unswerving perseverance natural to him, as he was a child of the Indian wars at the Kentucky stations. She was devoted to the memory of her husband. She had an indomitable will that checked her emotional nature. Once she determined what to do she proceeded, never consulting her own ease or comfort or the opinions of others. Her greatest pleasure & chief delight was to gratify her husband who was careful to avoid any appearance of actually commanding her.
Her husband had led a sea-faring life and often alluded to his experiences & spoke of things oceanic. He was very erect and graceful in his movements showing that the whole man had been put under most rigid discipline at some time in early life. But as his family grew his health declined. When his lungs became involved he put himself under the care of a German doctor in Warren county. He suffered bravely. The children were too young to know the extent of their loss.
For Mrs. McCredie there were no tears. Her whole being had exhausted itself in the interest of love. She asked her heart what her husband would advise; what would please him.
