From Bill White, descendant: Sarah Blanche Hall was only twelve days old when her mother Sarah Straley Hall died, February. 27, 1870. Joseph (Son of Christian and Christina Straley) and Mary - the grandparents - took the baby into their home. Both English and German were spoken. Her bachelor uncle Joshua taught her to read in the Bible at the age of four. During her stay in this home she was taught to knit, cook, ride horses (side saddle) and play the organ. Later in life she gave music lessons and used her horse for transportation. She also gained knowledge of herbs and home remedies made from plants grown for that purpose.

She graduated from the West Virginia Normal and Classical Academy of Buckhannon, June 18, 1891 and taught in its model school.
