Sarah Goodship was baptised on 13th August 1862 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of Rebecca Goodship, formerly Monk, and her husband George Goodship, a bricklayer. The family lived at Thorpes Yard off Back Street (later renamed Queen Street) in Hitchin. Sarah appears in the 1871 census living there with her parents and siblings. The 1881 census finds eighteen year old Sarah still living there but described as the head of the household, with only her younger sister and a visitor with her. She was working as a straw plaiter at this time.

In 1889, Sarah had a daughter called Annie. No father is named on Annie's baptism record. The following year, on 2nd August 1890, Sarah married Herbert Moules (or Moles). In all subsequent records her daughter Annie was referred to as Annie Moules, although whether this indicates that Herbert was actually her father or merely that she took his name as her stepfather is unknown.

Sarah and Herbert went on to have another six children together between 1891 and 1905, although the youngest died as a baby. Each census from 1891 to 1911 finds the family living at 3 Thorpes Yard. Sarah's widowed father was living with them in 1891. Herbert was described as a railway labourer in 1891, a road labourer in 1901 and a road sweeper in 1911. Sarah's daughter Annie appears to have married in 1910, but died aged only 21 early the following year.

Sarah died in 1924, aged 62. Herbert survived her by about four years.
